2006. In
Popo Danes Art veranda, exhibition ‘Co Schouten 15 years on Bali’.
Popo is a successful architect. In his
showroom he gives artists the opportunity to show their works. Often two
disciplines. Like a painter and a poet, or a piano player. I chose to work
together with the talented young modern dancer Nyoman Sura(1976-2013).. Again Dutch honorary consul Al
Purwa opened and Dr. Anak Agung Djelantik was guest of honor.
With Nyoman Sura we developed the dance 'Beauty is borrowed'. During this dance Nyoman burnt 6 sketches I made of him. What was left were 150 signed and numbered sets of postcards of the burnt poses.
During a
press conference a journalist asked me why I showed some nude drawings. I answered
that the Balinese are no moralists. I suggested him to look at the other 48
paintings that were hanging at the show. And Toulouse Lautrec has ever said:
’The dirt is not on the painting, it is in your mind.’ The journalist took
revenge by putting a headline in the paper: ‘Nyoman Sura presents vulgar poses.’
Of course
that is not an art review that stimulates you to make more exhibitions.
